THE MEANING OF DRUG ABUSE

According to Dr.Martin Osande Agwogie
Drug abuse can be define as the improper or illegal use of drugs, taking it in excessive doses without any medical reason. In other words Drugs is said to be abuse under any of the following conditions;-
  1. When it is not medically necessary.
  2. When its use is legally prohibited .
  3. When it is excessively used as in the case of socially acceptable drugs such as alcohol and cigarette.
Drug abuse ;-is characterized by taking more than the recommended doses of prescription drugs, such as barbiturates without medical supervision, or using government-controlled substances such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or other illegal substances.
Drug Dependence;- psychological and sometimes physical state characterized by a compulsion to use a drug to experience psychological or physical effects. Drug dependence takes several forms: tolerance, habituation, and addiction.

THE PROHIBITION OF DRUGS ABUSE IN THE HOLY QUR'AN
Allah the Exalted said
They ask you about liquor and gambling .Say ;In such some benefits for mankind. Yet their vice is greater than their usefulness”(Q:2;219)
in another chapter Allah saidيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالْأَنْصَابُ وَالْأَزْلَامُ رِجْسٌ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ (90) إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَنْ يُوقِعَ بَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةَ وَالْبَغْضَاءَ فِي الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ وَيَصُدَّكُمْ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَعَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَ (91)
1)“You who believe ,liquor and gambling ,idols and raffles ,are only the filthy work of Satan;turn aside from it so that you may prosper.”
Satan only wants to stir up enmity and jealousy among you by means of liquor and gambling ,and to hinder you from remembering Allah and from praying .So will you stop?” (Qur'an 5:90-91)“You who believe ,liquor and gambling ,idols and raffles ,are only the filthy work of Satan;turn aside from it so that you may prosper.”

From the above mentioned verses ,Allah(s.w.t) had totally prohibited taking wine ,and any form of things that can intoxicate a person because of it effects .Liquor can change a person's mind, psychologically, spiritually and physically.
THE PROPHETIC AHADEETHS THAT PROHIBITED TAKING ANY FORM OF INTOXICATNTS.
Following Ahadeeths are some of the prophetic traditions that warns every Muslim and believer from taking any form of things that can change his/her mind from normal sense to partially or totally intoxicated. However such thing either is sweat or bitter, smoke or drinks provided that ,it can intoxicate a person, such types of things are prohibited.
  • Narrated by Abi Burda that Abu Musa Al-Ash-ari, said that ,the prophet (saw) had sent him to Yemen and he asked the prophet about certain (Alcoholic) drinks which used to be prefer thirst. The prophet (saw) said “ Al-bit and Al-miztr? He said “ Al-bit and Al-coholic drinks make from honey. And AL-mizr is an alcoholic drink make from barley” The prophet said”Intoxicant are prohibited” [ sheikh AL-Bukhari hadeeth .]
  • Narrated by A'isha, when the last verse of surah AL-Baqarah were revealed ,the prophet (saw) went out (of his house to the masjid ) and said “ The trade of Alcohol has become illegal” [sheikh a l-Bukhari.]
  • Prayer not accepts ;Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar and Abdullah bin Amr. Allah's messenger said;”If anyone drinks wine Allah will not accept his prayer for four-thy days ,but if he repents Allah will forgive him . But if he again repeats the offense Allah will not accept prayer from him for four-thy days .If he repent again Allah will forgive him if he repents it four-thy times Allah will not accept his prayer for four-thy days .And repents Allah will not forgive him but He will give him to drink of the river of fluid flowing from the inhabitants of Hellfire.” [ sheikh At-tirmidhi hadith ]
  • Punishment said by Allah;Narrated by Anas bin Malik .the prophet(saw) “Beat drunk with palm-leaves and shoes .Abubakr give (such sinner)four-thy lashes .[Bukhari]
  • Narrated by Utbah Al-kharid the son of Nu'man charge for the Drunkenness ,so that the prophet ordered all the men present in the house to beats him, so all of them beat him, and I was also one of them who beat with shoes. [Sheikh Al-bukhari hadith.]
  • 6) Narrated by Abu Salma,Abu Hurayrah said “ A man who drank wine was brought to the prophet .The prophet said” Beat him “ Abu addeen “so some of us beat him with our hands some with their shoes and then when we finished someones said to him “may Allah disgrace you “on so ,for you are helping Satan to over power him.
  • Jabir reported that the Holy prophet (saw) said ;”Whosoever drink wine ,wipe him .If he repeats it for the forth time ,kill him .”He(Jabir) says A man was later brought to the prophet who had drank for forth time .He beats him but did not kill him. Tirmidhi and
    A bu-Dawud.
The following hadeeth clearly states that the messenger of Allah prohibited intoxicant.
  • Bin Umar reported that the messenger of Allah said ;”Every intoxicants is khamr (wine) and Every intoxicants Haram (unlawful).Whosoever drinks wine in this world and dies whilst consumed in it and does not repent will not drink It in the next wold “ [sheikh Al-Muslim.]
  • Jabir Narrated that a Man came from Yemen and asked the prophet (saw) about a wine made from corn called “mizr”which they drank in their land . The prophet asked “Is it intoxicating ? He replied “Yes “ the prophet said ;”Every intoxicants is unlawful. Verily there is covenant upon Allah for one who drinks intoxicating drinks ,from teenful khabul, they asked “O messenger of Allah “what is teenful khabul ?He said “The sweat of inmates of hell of the pus(of impurities )of the inmates of the hell.” [sheikh AL-muslim.]
  • Jabir; Narrated that the messenger of Allah said “Whatever intoxicate in a greater quantity is also unlawful in its smaller quantity” [Tirmidhi,Abu-Dawud and bin Majah.]
  • Umme salma Narrated that the messenger of Allah prohibited Every intoxicant and muffatar(anything which excites and irritate the mind badly and heart) [sheikh Abu-Dawud .]
  • Abdullah bn Amr ;reported from the prophet (saw)who said “One who is disobedient drank and shall not enter paradise” [sheikh Darami hadith]
  • Ibn Umar Narrated tat the messenger of Allah said “There are three for whom Allah has forbidden paradise ,a habitual drunkard ,one disobedient to parents ,and careless husband who establish impurity in his family “ [Sheikh Ahmad and Nasa I.hadith]
Abu Musa Al-Ash-ari ;Narrated that the messenger of Allah said “There are three who will not enter paradise, habitual drunkard, one who cuts of blood flies and one who believed in sorcery. [ Sheikh Ahmad. hadith.]
Ibnu Anas reported that the messenger of Allah said,”If a habitual drunkard dies ,he will meet Allah like one who worship idols.” [Ahmad, bin Majah from Abu hurayrah.]
  • Abu Musa reported that he used to say “I do not differentiate whether i drink wine or worship idols beside Allah.” [An-Nasa'i]
From the above Ahadeeth,we can clearly see the prophet and the Islamic views regarding intoxicants In another Hadith the prophet has describe intoxicant as;-
    A) The key to all evils
    B) The head of all errors and lapses
C)The most terrible of major sins.
    D) The mother of all atrocities.
    E) The mother of all evils.
Why are drugs ,intoxicants so abhorrent, awful, and vice in Islam ? Let us look at what the Islamic scholars Said concerning drugs abuse In the next chapter Insha Allah.
SAYING OF THE ISLAMIC SCHOLARS REGARDING THE EFFECTS OF DRUGS ABUSE FROM A WORLDLY AND RELIGIOUS POINTS.
  • Ibn Hajar al-Makki (R.A) Narrated from some scholars that there are 120 worldly and religious determent in consuming hashish(cannabis) not 10,not 20 but 120 harmful things occur by the consumption of drugs in illegal way or without professional doctor's prescriptions,by taking drug without necessary need a person is now involve in drugs abuse or drugs misuse.
  • The great physicist Ibn -e-Seena says that “Large amount of it dries up semen (the fluid that carries sperm thus rendering him incapable of passion in sexual intercourse.
  • Ibn Battar says ;-”A group of people used it (drugs) and then became mentally deranged (insane s).
  • Imam Zarakhshee narrated in his book upon the prohibition of Hashish (cocaine) from Zakariyya Razee , a famous ,desiccant semen, bring about confusion,Neurosis, dries up all body fluids, which would cause sudden death. Also it defeat the mind ,induces helpic fever, tuberculosis and oedema.(drops)
  • Ibn Taymiyyah (A renewed scholar)says;-”All the faults, blemishes, bad things in khamr(wine) are present in hashish and more because the majority of fault in khamr effect religion, but hashish effect to a great extent both religion and body.
    SHEIKH IBN TAYMIYYAH DESCRIPTIONS
From religious points of view it is as intoxicating as wine ,it destroys the mind ,causes forgetfulness, causes to reveal secrets, destroys shame incubates intelligence, prevents Salah and instigates towards haram, forbidden aspects it.
From a physical aspects it deteriorates the mind, cuts off the means for offspring, bring about leprosy, sickness, feverish shivers, bad breath, loss of eyebrows and teeth warning of blood, tuberculosis, damage intestine, destroys body organs ,punctures the liver, burns the stomach and weakness eyesight amongst other things,it is evil is far greater.
Imam ibn Taymiyyah states;-”It should be enough haram for a person just to know that it prevents you from the remembrance of Allah and salah. In short ,everything ,which obstructs a person from zikrullah and sallah is haram like wine .
Allah(SWT) states in he Qur'an;-”And Allah has forbidden on to you the “khaba'ith'”[ i.e repulsive, nicked and evil things] .What could be more evil than thing which impairs he faculties of though and perception in the mind?
DAILAMI AL-HMAYREE STATES;- I asked the holy prophet “O messenger of Allah (saw) Verily we are in cold land ,and we have] to work hard therein, and we prepare wine from this work which give us strength in our works and in the chill of our cities ;He reply he asked”Does it intoxicates? “yes”he reply .He said “Give it up” I said “verily the people cannot give t up;”He said .”If you do not give I up fight with them.” [ Abu-Dawuud. ] This Hadith explain,to us the principles cause of what is haram chiefly,if it intoxicates it is haram. The very same reason and cause is to be found in drugs.
THE CONSENSUS OF THE ULAMA' REGARDING DRUGS ABUSE (INTOXICANTS).
Is Narrated from several scholars in the prohibition of hashish ,scholars includes Qiraafi and Taymiyyah. And that was not enough ,Ibn
Taymiyyah has further said;-”Whoever regards it lawful has became kafir “(Irreligious God forbids) The scholars o all four madhahib unanimously agreed that consuming any things intoxicating is haram ,certain plants have that, the scholars have included intoxicating pants ,e.t.c {withing the prohibition}.
According to the three prominent Imam (Imam Shari'a,Imam
Malik, and Imam Ahmad.) consuming anything intoxicating however small the amount will bring the legal punishment of 80 lashes to the person.
However,in the Hanafi madhab fatawah,AL-KHULASA LIL HANAFIYYAH. It is stated;-”Any intoxicating amount has been taking then according to Imam Muhammad Hadd will be necessary according to Imam Abu-Hanifah and Imam Abu Yusuf he will be reprimanded severally, but the Hadd will be imposed. Ta'zir (reprimanded) is such a punishment that holds no specific amount and it is for the judge to decide.
Bear in mind that according to to some scholars ,in certain cases Ta'zir could prove to be more severe than Hadd it self ,e.g. when the person persistently commit the crime.

THE MEDICAL CONSEQUENCES OF DRUG ABUSE.
Drugs abuse can cause the following effects in to Human Body such as;-
HIV,HEPATITIES AND OTHER INFECTIUOS DISEASES.
Muscular skeletal effects
Prenatal effects
Neurological effects.
Other health effects
Mental health effects.
Cardiovascular effects
Hormonal effects.
Respiratory effects
Liver damage
Gastrointestinal effects.
Kidney damage .
Muscular skeletal effects
Cancer & Morality

The medical consequences of the drug abuse in e human body ,as listed above ,I will like to explain them one after the other, with a reliable sources ,may Allah assist us ,and give us sound mind to comprehend each points, ameeeeen.
  1. HIV,HEPATITIES AND OTHER INFECTIUOS DISEASES.
Many addicts needs to “hit bottom “before they seek help; pedro was always able to fine “a trapdoor” in 1986,however ,at age 29,he was infected with Aids virus.”at the time he was high on heroin, so he don't really get it .When the diagnosis finally sank in,it was shocking wake-up call”
Drug abuse not only weakens the immune system but as also linked to risky behaviors like needle sharing and the like hood of acquiring HIV-a Aids,Hepatitis and many other infectious disease. Drugs that can lead to HIV,HEPATITIES and other infectious diseases are ;-
    1) Heroin 2) Steroids 3) Cocaine 4) Methamphetamine.
  2. CARDIOVASCULAR EFFECTS

Researchers have found that most drugs can have adverse cardiovascular effects, ranging from abnormal heart rate to heart attack. Injection drug use can also lead to cardiovascular problems such as collapsed veins and bacterial infections of the blood vessels and heart  valves.

    3) RESPIRATORY EFFECTS
Don't smoke or drink any kinds of intoxicant it can affects your health. Health is wealth

Drugs abuse can be lead to a variety of respiratory problem . smoking cigarettes, for example has been shown to cause bronchitis, emphysema and lung cancer. Marijuana smoke may also cause respiratory problems . The use of some drugs may also cause breathing to slow, block air from entering the lungs o exacerbate asthma symptom.
Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome, (ARDS), acute condition in which breathing is rapid and labored and oxygen debt is hard to correct. It occurs as a reaction of the lungs to a range of life-threatening events, including major injuries, inhalation of smoke or poisonous gases, fat embolism (blockage in a blood vessel), and septic shock (common when severe bacterial infection shuts down body systems). It is treated in an intensive care unit. The death rate from ARDS is high.

    GASTROINTESTINAL EFFECTS
Mel. Smith is popular University-educated actor and comedian who started taking the pain killer, nurofen (type of ibuprofen) plus (12mg of cocaine (tablets) and taking ,as many as 50 tablets a day . Taking these kinds of drugs to excess can lead to gastrointestinal problems ,inflammation of stomach, chronic continuation, abdominal bloating and liver damage. The habit landed in a hospital with two bust stomach vices.(story)
Among other adverse effects, may drugs of abuse have been known to cause and vomiting soon after use. Cocaine use can also cause abdominal pain.

    1) Cocaine, 4) Heroin. 7) Prescriptions opiates.
    2) Nicotine 5) LSD
    3) GHB 6) MDMA
6) MUSCULOSKELETAL EFFECTS
.
The benefits do not out weigh the known harmful consequences with kids, steroids use ,during childhood or adolescence resulting in artificial high sex hormone levels, can signal the bones stop growing earlier than they normally would have ,leading to short statute other drugs may also cause severe muscle cream-ping and overall muscle weakness.
DRUGS THAT CAN AFFECTS THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYYTEM
  • Inhalant
  • MDMA
  • PCP
  • Steroids
7) KIDNEY DAMAGE

Kidney Dialysis, also known as hemo-dialysis, medical treatment used to remove waste materials from the blood of patients lacking renal function (Kidney). Blood from an artery is pumped through a dialysis, or artificial kidney, where it flows past a semipermeable membrane. Dialysis fluid passing on the other side of the membrane removes unwanted elements in the blood by diffusion. The blood is then returned to the body through a vein.
A primary function of kidneys is the removal of poisonous wastes from the blood. Chief among these wastes are the nitrogen-containing compounds urea and uric acid, which result from the breakdown of proteins and nucleic acids. Life-threatening illnesses occur when too many of these waste products accumulate in the bloodstream. Fortunately, a healthy kidney can easily rid the body of these substances
WHAT DRUGS AFFECT THE KIDNEYS
Many different drugs, both legal and illegal, affect the kidneys’ ability to operate properly. Among these substances are:
  • Heroin.
  • Cocaine.
  • MDMA(ecstasy)
  • Inhalants
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco.
  • Painkillers
  • Heroin
Heroin, which is an illicit opium that can be injected, snorted, or smoked, can cause renal damage in a few different ways:
Coma due to overdose can lead to rhabdomyolysis,a condition characterized by the breakdown of muscle tissue and release of proteins into the blood One of these proteins is myoglobin, which can cause obstruction and kidney damage. Dehydration, acidosis, low blood pressure, and oxygen deficiency can exacerbate these effects. This syndrome is sometimes seen in users who have not overdosed or experienced a coma.
    - Intravenous heroin users are more likely to contract bacterial and fungal infections, which can lead to acute kidney inflammation
    - Heroin users who inject under the skin have an increased risk of secondary amyloidosis,or protein build-up in organs and tissues arising in association with the chronic infections and inflammation commonly seen in this population. This condition can progress to kidney failure if heroin abuse continues.

Cocaine

Cocaine, a powerful stimulant drug that causes euphoria and increased energy, has been shown to cause kidney complications in acute and chronic users. Much like heroin, rhabdomyolysis is commonly seen in those who abuse cocaine, and it can lead to kidney failure. As many as 33% of patients in the emergency room with cocaine-related complaints develop acute kidney failure.
Further, cocaine abuse can lead to renal infarction, as well as promote atherosclerosis, or plaque buildup in the renal arterial walls—conditions that are both characterized by disruptions in blood flow to the kidney, and resultant tissue damage. Symptoms of a renal infarction include nausea, vomiting, and severe abdominal pain

MDMA

Using MDMA, a popular “club drug,” can harm the kidneys in the following ways:

Hypothermia, or a dangerous rise in body temperature, caused by dehydration, physical activity, and hot environments can lead to rhabdomyolysis, the breakdown of muscle tissue

Estimate annual dialysis lost for just one person who has weaken his own kidney by shooting heroin(heroin nepropathy) $ 50,000.
Some rugs may cause kidney damage or failure ,either directly or in incorrectly from dangerous increases I body temperature and muscle breakdown.
8) LIVER DAMAGE

Chronic use of some drugs ,such as heroin, inhalants and steroids, may lead to significant damage to the liver.
  1. DRUGS THAT CAN CAUSE LIVER DAMAGE
  1. Heroin ( 3) Inhalants
  2. Steroids (4) Alcohol
    9) NEUROLOGICAL EFFCTS

NATIONAL INSTITUDE ON DRUGS ABUSE
Established in 1970, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism investigates the causes and treatment of alcoholism, and alcohol-related illnesses such as liver disease and fetal alcohol syndrome. The institute funds many studies investigating how genetics may influence alcohol abuse and alcoholism, and it also supports research to determine whether alcohol abuse contributes to other physical and mental disorders, such as compulsive gambling and other addictive disorders as well as certain cancers. It also funds research on the prevention and treatment of underage drinking.
Established in 1974, the National Institute on Drug Abuse became part of the NIH in 1992. The institute funds and conducts research that investigates the biological, social, behavioral, and neurological effects of drug abuse, as well as the causes, prevention, and treatment of drug addiction. The institute’s AIDS Research Program addresses drug use as it relates to AIDS. The National Institute on Drug Abuse provides literature about drugs and drug abuse to health professionals, educators, and the public.
Effects of Aging
Gerontologists study the social and behavioral effects of aging. The biological effects of aging, such as the loss of flexibility in some tissues and the decline of organ function, can influence these social and behavioral effects. For example, the heart becomes less efficient as a person ages, making exercise more difficult.

Organ or System
Natural Effects of Aging
Accelerating Factors
Skin
Loses thickness and elasticity (wrinkles appear)
Process accelerated by smoking, excessive exposure to sun

Bruises more easily as blood vessels near surface weaken

Brain/Nervous System
Loses some capacity for memorization and learning as cells die
Process accelerated by overuse of alcohol and other drugs, repeated blows to the head

Becomes slower to respond to stimuli
(reflexes dull)

Senses
Become less sharp with loss of nerve cells
Process accelerated by smoking, repeated exposure to loud noise
Lungs
Become less efficient as elasticity decreases
Process accelerated by smoking, poor air quality, insufficient exercise
Heart
Pumps less efficiently, making exercise more difficult
Process accelerated by overuse of alcohol and tobacco, poor eating habits
Circulation
Worsens, and blood pressure rises, as arteries harden
Process accelerated by injury, obesity
Joints
Lose mobility (knee, hip) and deteriorate from constant wear and pressure (disappearance of cartilage between vertebrae results in old age 'shrinking')
Process accelerated by injury, obesity
Muscles
Lose bulk and strength
Process accelerated by insufficient exercise, starvation
Liver
Filters toxins from blood less efficiently
Process accelerated by alcohol abuse, viral infection

10) MENTAL EFFECTS

Chronic use of some drugs can lead to both short- and long-term changes in the brain, which can lead to mental health issues including paranoia, depression, anxiety, aggression, hallucinations, and other problems.
Many people who are addicted to drugs are also diagnosed with other mental disorders and vice versa. Compared with the general population, people addicted to drugs are roughly twice as likely to suffer from mood and anxiety disorders, with the reverse also true. In 2015, an estimated 43.4 million (17.9 percent) adults ages 18 and older experienced some form of mental illness (other than a developmental or substance use disorder). Of these, 8.1 million had both a substance use disorder and another mental illness. Although substance use disorders commonly occur with other mental illnesses, it’s often unclear whether one helped cause the other or if common underlying risk factors contribute to both disorders.

Drugs that can cause mental health problems:

  • Cocaine
  • Inhalants
  • Ketamine
  • Kratom
  • LSD
  • Marijuana
  • MDM
  • Methamphetamine
  • PCP
  • Prescription stimulants
  • Steoids (appearance- and performance-enhancing drugs)
CANCER EFFECTS
Cigarette smoking is the most preventable cause of cancer in the United States. Smoking cigarettes has been linked to cancer of the mouth, neck, stomach, and lungs, among others. Nonsmoking people exposed to secondhand cigarette smoke increase their chances of developing lung cancer in addition to other health problems.
Young adult males who use marijuana and began their use during adolescence are at risk for an aggressive form of testicular cancer.
Furthermore cigarettes also have many effects in the human body,
One of the early scientific evidence against tobacco use was the 1995, united kingdom health education authority reports which stated that “cigarettes smoking contained more than 4,000 chemicals of which many are known to be toxic, carcinogenic or mutagen. T h report estimated that 12,000 people per year die prematurely as a result of smoking. T he cause of death were divided as 38 percent heart and circulation diseases and 28 percent respiratory illness.
The following are also the effects of nicotine tobacco.
  • Damage to the eyes, nose and throat
